Due: Thursday night, October 19


  1. Please open the Tanach to ויקרא י"ט (Leviticus 19). Please read the wide range of mitzvot here and choose one mitzvah (commandment) that you can relate to.
  2. Please explain why you chose this Mitzvah or pasuk (verse) and build a fence around it. How do you interpret this Mitzvah? How do you or can you fulfill this mitzvah in your daily life? How can it be a guideline for you as a Jew in the modern world?
  3. Using a digital camera, please take a photograph that in some way expresses the verse you selected. The photo can be a place, a person, something you’ve created, an object in nature, etc… Be creative! The image may only have meaning for you!
  4. Write a concluding paragraph explaining how this photograph expresses the Jewish mitzvah/ value you selected.
  5. This assignment must be constructed of 2 paragraphs and a picture.

    This was my torah portion from my B'nai Mitzvah!!! I'm not sure if we are allowed to repeat or not... but just to be sure, I am planning on doing "You shall not insult the deaf, or place a stumbling block before the blind."

2nd Temple, Herodian Mansions and Southern Wall

Today, September 19, 2017, Kitat Maayan went on a full day tiyul to the old city, specifically to the 2 nd temple, Herodian mansions and to the southern wall. First we walked through the old city and eventually settled down and started discussing the four sects, specifically the Tzdokim (Sadducees). We learned that they lived in the upper city of Jerusalem and were very wealthy. We also discovered that they were religiously Jewish even though they adopted the Roman culture. The Tzdokim practiced Judaism very well.  They kept kosher, worshipped at Beit Hamikdash and were mostly Cohanim (priests). (As opposed to the Prushim who went to the Beit Knesset, believed in some sort of afterlife and were practicing Rabbi’s. Tykocin Blog

Tykocin was the second and my favorite day in Poland. We started the day by going on a two hour bus ride to get there. Tykocin was a very close knit community. Everyone who was from there would introduce themselves by saying "Hi I'm _____ from Tykocin" because they were so proud of where they came from. Once there we were there we went to a synagogue, then to the former market, to the river, did a tfilah in the synagogue, then took a silent bus ride to the Lupochova forest. The synagogue was the first place we went once we arrived. It was a beautiful place with prayers decorating the walls because at the time it was very expensive to print all of the books to pray with. The synagogue was used to pray and study torah and also to read letters from people who had made Aliyah. There we also talked about different people in the community including Levi Tallismacher. Streams of Judaism Tiyuul/

Today, Kitat Maayan went back to Hebrew Union College (HUC) to learn about the different streams of Judaism.  Only this time, we had our parents with us.  To sum it up, today's tiyuul was one of emotion, questions, and learning. We have been to HUC a few times, and each time I go, I am able to discover something new there, such as the rooftop or a cafe.  I personally love going to the HUC campus because of the welcoming and loving community that I see there.  The campus of HUC has a lot of importance.  Before 1967, the land that the current HUC Jerusalem campus resides on was a war zone.  The Jordanians would fire on this land; it was a no man's land.  As we know, the six day war happened in 1967, and with this we conquered the old city.  As a result, this land became very desired and wealthy.  This can be seen with the King David and David Citadel hotels.  We had the opportunity to interview three different Jewish leader...
