Oral Law Assignment

The mitzvah I chose to discuss is located in Leviticus 19:3.

It states: “You shall each revere your mother and father.”

I interpret this to mean that you should honor and respect your parents. The Torah implies and I believe that the majority of parents are smarter than their children and know what’s best for them. I chose this commandment because I feel that although not the easiest, it is one I feel I should be able to achieve. There have been many, many times, in which my parents and I were fighting and after I a bit I finally submit and say “okay, okay, you’re right, you know more than me.” At first I believe my parents got me to that point to torment me but I later realized it’s just another life lesson they were trying to teach me. There are a fortitude of reasons parents should be honored and respected. First and foremost, they gave you life, entitling you to be apart of this world and having a chance to succeed. Second most parents support their children, emotionally, financially and in many other ways at least until they’re 18. This entitles them to the respect they deserve. Sometimes children take for granted everything their parents do for them and occasionally I happen to be one of them. Inside I know to honor and respect my parents, now I just have to make sure I can do it all of the time.

I chose this photo for two reasons. One, it symbolizes the love that my parents and I share for each other. I think it can be shown on our faces that we are very happy and that while all families have occasionally issues, I try to respect and honor my parents as frequently as I can. Second, this photo was taken during my brother’s Bar Mitzvah earlier this year. My parents have done so much make their children who they are today. I also like to think that as an older brother, I have given advice to and taught my siblings many things throughout the years. On that day, I was so proud of how well he did leading the services and have had so much joy watching him go through one stage of life just as I have entered the next.

Overall, this mitzvah is very important for me because it is something that I have been trying to achieve for many years now as will be for many to come.
